Riots in New Caledonia claimed a seventh victim.
The public prosecutor of Noumée has indicated that this Friday, May 24, he will appeal for the seventh victim after the riots that have rocked New Caledonia for almost two weeks.
The death was announced as Emmanuel Macron left the island after an express visit.
This seventh victim succumbed to his injuries after being shot by the police a few days ago.
New Caledonia has been rocked by riots for 12 days following the so-called “thaw” electoral reform, which plans to expand the electorate for provincial elections. This text ignited the gunpowder and started a wave of violence the likes of which the island had not seen for four decades.
During his visit to the island, Emmanuel Macron assured that he was “committed to ensuring that this reform does not go through force”, but called for a “renewal of dialogue with the aim of reaching a global agreement” to give the right to vote to more voters, by the end of June, so that “this treaty may be submitted to the vote of the Caledonians.” Before that political deadline, “the goal is to establish order in the days to come,” he warned.
In total, seven people, including two gendarmes, have died since the beginning of these conflicts, which caused considerable material damage.
The state of emergency introduced on May 16 is still in effect, with accompanying measures: a 12-hour daily curfew, a ban on gatherings, the transport of weapons and the sale of alcohol, and a ban on the TikTok app. This last measure, attacked before the State Council, was confirmed on Thursday by the administrative authority.
