Obituary: Jean Charuel

Considered a memory of the village by the local community, Jean was born in October 1926 in the hamlet of Granges. He attended elementary school until the age of 12, and then worked on the family farm.

At the beginning of the war, faced with a lack of manpower, he worked on the surrounding estates, and in 1944 he enlisted and served with the Moroccan Spahis.

He then met Hélène Lavefve and they married in 1950. Six children arrived in succession to enlarge the household, Jean-Paul, Christian, now deceased, Francis, Corinne, Thierry and Pierre-Jean.

In 1963, Žan got a job at the Dairy Cooperative, where he worked until his retirement. By the choice of his colleagues, he held a trade union mandate.

After the course, he obtained a CAP for an electrical mechanic. His retirement was very active with terms of office at the Industrial Court and trusteeships he held at the MSA and Montier Local Hospital, along with volunteering at the Photo Festival, at the hospital and his regular participation in the Wednesday Club.

Always willing to reach out to others and be of service to them, he was at the beginning of the creation of the Maison famille de Droyes, which became a secondary agricultural school of which he was the first president.

Recently, he actively participated in a writing workshop organized by the municipality.

In the artistic field, his pencil skills allowed him to create publication covers or create logos, always responding to requests when needed, and he loved to share his passion for drawing with his children and great-grandchildren.

When his grandson Hubert asked him to shoot in the film “Petit Paysan”, Jean played an important role, devoting himself to the game and the world of horses, especially to the people of the Camargue, and especially to hunting wild boar, refusing to shoot deer that he considered beautiful .

At the age of 97, his health suddenly deteriorated and he died on June 5 in the Montier Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. A civil tribute will be paid to him on Monday, June 11, at the Droyes cemetery.
