For Dr. Julien Scanzi, a gastroenterologist in Clermont-Ferrand, “ a sedentary lifestyle can worsen IBD symptoms, increase inflammation and lead to muscle loss. On the other hand, regular physical activity can reduce inflammation, improve gut health, strengthen the immune system, maintain weight and muscle mass, reduce anxiety and pain, and improve quality of life. »
Yet, despite these benefits, two-thirds of IBD patients reduce or give up physical activity. And this for several reasons, for example due to intense fatigue associated with the disease, but also due to digestive symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain.
When movement calms IBD
Some also mention lack of motivation and fear of injury. Finally, few patients are aware of the existence of adapted physical activity. Which is based on a doctor’s prescription and offers special supervision.
” Since IBD is now proven to be an environmental disease, it is crucial to encourage patients to be active in their health. », explains Anne Buisson, director of Afa Crohn RCH France. ” Afa informs and supports them to improve their quality of life and give them leverage to limit risks caused by environmental factors, including diet and physical activity. »
Let’s get started!
With the “IBD Enter the Games” campaign, Afa Crohn RCH France wants to encourage the practice of physical activity among patients suffering from IBD.
It is also a way to raise awareness of other environmental factors that can influence the disease: especially tobacco and ultra-processed foods. Factors that we can act on in order to improve the quality of life and limit the risks of worsening the disease!
Other stated goals are to promote the experiences of athletes with IBD and to encourage decision-makers to consider IBD as a public health problem in its own right (increasing cases, especially among younger people).
