The Regional Health Agency of Île-de-France warns about the proliferation of tiger mosquitoes in view of the Olympic Games


From May 1 to November 30, an enhanced control campaign was implemented to counter the proliferation of the tiger mosquito in mainland France. In Île-de-France, resources are doubled in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The tiger mosquito is a type of mosquito that reproduces easily in watery and humid environments and when the temperature rises. It can transmit serious diseases such as dengue, zika or chikungunya. It is present in most French departments and has been growing in France since 2004. To combat the reproduction of the tiger mosquito and the spread of the diseases it transmits, the ARS implements prevention and control measures , until November 30, 2024. In Île-de-France, the vigilance is doubled, for the Olympic Games of 2024.

“Nesting traps” are installed throughout the Île-de-France region to “detect the establishment and activity of mosquitoes,” the Regional Health Agency states in its press release. It has “526 nesting traps, spread over eight departments and three airports.” Epidemiological surveillance is also carried out: “The ARS Île-de-France is informed by health professionals of cases of dengue, chikungunya or zika that appear in the region”. The traps are then placed according to the places where the contamination is the highest.

The ARS advises “to eliminate around and in” your “habitat all sources of stagnant water, potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes.”

For the 2024 Olympics, the Regional Health Agency plans stronger measures regarding the proliferation of the tiger mosquito. “The actions of the public authorities have been strengthened, in particular with regard to the awareness and prevention of travelers who leave or arrive” from places where diseases related to this mosquito are present. The health services are increasing their efforts to “identify and reduce areas prone to the proliferation of mosquitoes near places of large gatherings” specifies the press release which explains that “hotels are also sensitized to the risks related to the “institution of the tiger mosquito and the right reflexes to get rid of it”. “Awareness” letters from the ARS Île-de-France and the prefect of the Île-de-France region were sent to all the mayors of the Region.
