The State Bureau of Statistics and Demography published the 5th general population and housing census (RGPH-5) from 2023. The Thiès region, located in west-central Senegal, is one of the most populated regions in the country. According to the latest statistical data of the State Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), the region will have 2,402,488 million inhabitants in 2023.
The population is spread over different departments in the region. The M’bour department, home to tourist towns such as Saly and Somone, is the most populated with more than 600,000 inhabitants. Then follow the departments of Thiès (almost 400,000 inhabitants) and Tivaouane (about 300,000 inhabitants).
Within these departments, certain municipalities stand out with a large number of inhabitants. This particularly applies to the municipality of M’bour, which has more than 280,000 inhabitants, and the municipalities of Thiès Nord, Thiès Est and Ouest, which have a total of almost 400,000 inhabitants.
According to data from the 5th general population census, the gender distribution in the Thiès region seems slightly more favorable for men. Indeed, census data show that men make up slightly more than half of the region’s total population. This slight predominance of men is an element to be taken into account when analyzing the demographic structure of the Thiès region.
Furthermore, the Thiès region is characterized by a diversity of demographic structure. There are also large cities such as the cities of Thiès, M’bour and Tivaouane, as well as rural areas such as the districts of Fissel, Sessène and Sindia. This diversity is reflected in the distribution of the population, with communes such as Joal-Fadioutha, Ndiaganiào, Fissel and N’Guéniene having between 40,000 and 60,000 inhabitants.
The Thiès region offers a rich and diverse demographic panorama, combining both dynamic urban centers and rapidly developing rural areas.
