Every year traffic accidents cause thousands of deaths, especially due to excessive speed. In order to solve this phenomenon, a new device called AIV will be integrated into all new vehicles starting this July.
In 2023, 3,170 people died on French roads, according to Statista. The European Union therefore decided to act this summer by introducing major changes. One of these adjustments takes effect on July 1.
This includes equipping all new vehicles with a speed information and adjustment system, called the Intelligent Speed Adapter (AIV).
According to the government, the main aim of this system is to help “the driver maintain the speed limit on the road”, by providing “information when the speed limit is exceeded”.
Working with this new device is very simple. Using the activity system via GPS and a camera that detects road signs.
AIV, or ISA (Intelligent Speed Assistance) in English, analyzes data, such as the speed indicated on speed limit signs or GPS map data, to make a comparison with the actual speed of the vehicle.
If excessive speed is confirmed, the vehicle reacts automatically. On some models, an audible signal or light signal will sound each time the speed is too high.
On other models, the on-board system may even reduce power and make it difficult to use the gas pedal.
According to European Commission estimates, this new device could save up to 25,000 lives in Europe by 2038.
Is it possible to deactivate AIV?
In addition to the instructions for use, drivers ask whether the system can be deactivated.
“The basic principle should be that the driver is always responsible for following the applicable traffic rules and that the ISA system is a driver assistance system that warns the driver, whenever possible and appropriate,” explains the text of the European Road Safety Charter.
However, although it can be deactivated, AIV it starts every time the vehicle is used again.
